The Grave Deception

The Grave Deception
PART 2
The funeral hall fell silent.
Then—
THUMP.
A muffled sound came from inside the coffin.
Every mourner froze.
The son slowly raised his head.
Maria's face lost all color.
"No..." she whispered.
THUMP.
The sound came again.
Louder.
A woman in the front row gasped.
Someone dropped a candle.
The son stared at the casket.
"Did you hear that?" he asked.
Maria suddenly grabbed his arm.
"You're imagining things!" she shouted. "Your father is dead!"
THUMP! THUMP!
This time everyone heard it.
Panic swept through the room.
The son looked at Maria. Her hands were shaking uncontrollably.
Then he understood.
He stepped toward the coffin.
Maria threw herself in front of it.
"No! Don't touch it!"
"Move."
"You don't understand!"
"Move, Maria."
Two security guards gently pulled her aside as she screamed.
The son placed his trembling hand on the lid.
From inside—
BANG.
A desperate strike.
Someone was alive.
Gasps exploded through the chapel.
The son tore at the silver handles.
"Help me!"
Three men rushed forward.
Together they lifted the lid.
Inside, his father lay bound in a black suit.
Tape covered his mouth.
His wrists were tied.
His eyes overflowed with tears.
For one horrifying second nobody moved.
Then the son ripped away the tape.
The older man inhaled violently, dragging air into his lungs as though returning from death itself.
"Dad...?"
His father looked at him and began crying.
"I tried to scream..." he whispered.
The entire room erupted.
People shouted.
Someone called 911.
Maria slowly backed away.
Her legs gave out beneath her.
The father turned his head toward her.
"She drugged me," he said weakly. "She wanted everything."
The son looked at Maria in disbelief.
"You tried to bury him alive?"
Maria's face collapsed.
Tears filled her eyes.
Then she whispered the words that froze the room once more.
"He changed his will."
Silence.
"He left everything to you."
The son stared at her.
Maria looked toward the rescued man inside the coffin.
"I gave him twenty years of my life... and he gave me nothing."
Sirens echoed outside.
The father reached for his son's hand.
His fingers trembled.
"I wasn't afraid of dying," he whispered.
He looked directly at him.
"I was afraid you'd think I abandoned you."
The son broke into tears and held his father's hand as police rushed through the chapel doors.

Behind them, Maria stood alone among the white roses and flickering candles, realizing she had not lost an inheritance.
She had lost everything.
